The middle section of the Intermezzo begins in the key of D-flat major (the relative major). Both the rhythm (now in continuous 16th notes rather than 32nd notes) and the harmony (anchored mostly on the tonic pedal point in the bass) are more restful than in the outer sections, even though the music is based on the same motives as the A section.
