The Introduction

The introductory chords set the scene for the Nocturne to follow, and need to be played with attention to mood and atmosphere, tonal balance (voicing) and pedalling. A sense of timing is also vital. The top note of each chord in the progression forms a melodic line. With any melodic line, it is important to sing it first to find the sense of the phrase’s direction (in this case towards the downbeat of the second bar and then resolving very softly and gently to the final G#) as well as tone colour, intensity and breathing places....
