Phrasing and Accent In music, because of the hierarchy of beats, the first beat of the bar is naturally stressed. Broadly speaking, long notes tend to receive more weight than short ones, and (in melodic lines) higher notes more emphasis than lower ones. Additionally, there are other types of accent, sometimes indicated by the composer, but often not.
