As you played through the piece, you no doubt noticed that there was quite a bit of repetition. In the score, each phrase is numbered, allowing us to see more easily the phrase repetitions: phrases 1 and 2 are repeated verbatim, then phrases 3-6 are given an exact repetition as well. The piece is in fact a rounded binary form, and it’s not clear why Schumann didn’t use repeat signs (with first and second endings), as is common with pieces in this form.
