Chapter 2 - Non-Chord Tones

This melody uses chord tones and non-chord tones. The chord tones are circled in red. Chord tones are those notes that are found in the accompanying chord at any moment. They are consonant with the chord. Non-chord tones are those notes that are not found in the accompanying chord. They are dissonant with the chord.
