Chopin’s Ballade No. 1 in G Minor holds a special place in the piano repertoire. Revered by pianists of all levels and one of Chopin’s own favourite works, it is often approached with equal parts admiration and apprehension. While the piece does not always contain the most overtly virtuosic writing, it presents an unusually high concentration of distinct pianistic challenges, making it exceptionally demanding to learn and perform.
In this workshop, Yuval Cohen explores this iconic work from a pianistic and pedagogical perspective. Rather than focusing on interpretation or musical narrative, the session examines the physical and technical actions required at the keyboard to realise Chopin’s musical and emotional intentions. Drawing on many years of teaching and performance experience, Yuval demonstrates why this work can feel overwhelming - and how understanding its underlying pianistic concepts can transform the learning process.
