The Three S’s (slowly, separately, sections) form the basis of craftsmanship when learning new pieces. Here I look at “slowly”, as much a tool for maintaining, polishing and refining as for initial note learning. I look at practising at “the speed of no mistakes”, emulating Rachmaninov’s love of ultra-slow practice speeds.
