Lento con gran espressione means ‘slowly, with grand expression’. The introduction needs to be played with gravitas – grandly and expansively. Marked piano, these introductory bars set the stage for the Nocturne, and need to contain the kernel of the dark, sad feelings the piece evokes. Be in no hurry, and really feel the pathos in the rests (which need to be audible as breathing places). Make sure the RH chords are voiced clearly to the top notes, to the soprano line.
