Before diving into the analysis for unit 2, it will be useful to watch these two videos on chromatic diatonic harmony. “Chromatic diatonic harmony” refers to harmonies that are outside of the prevailing key of a piece. They give a piece extra drama – extra spice – extra impetus to move us forward and keep us listening, but we will see how Mozart and Beethoven use these ideas not just as decoration but to form the structure of their music.
