Debussy’s Clair de Lune
21 May 2026 @ 18:30 BST (GMT +01:00)
Going Beyond the Notes
Debussy’s Clair de lune is one of the most loved and played works in the piano repertoire, but it offers more layers than many often realise. Its challenges do not lie only in notes or technique. More than many earlier works, its meaning is carried through tone colour, texture, resonance, atmosphere and timing.
In this presentation, Yuval Cohen uses Clair de lune as a case study to explore what makes Debussy’s music so distinctive and how pianists can respond to it in practice. Rather than approaching the piece only as a set of technical or interpretative decisions, the session places it within the broader aesthetic world of impressionism, where sound itself becomes central to musical meaning.
Looking closely at the piece in detail, Yuval will explore the kinds of sonority it requires, Debussy’s highly distinctive treatment of rhythm and rubato, and the relationship between sound, structure and expression. The session will also include practical exercises designed to help participants develop a more sensitive, stylistically informed and convincing performance.
What Will Be Covered
Participants will explore:
- What makes Debussy’s musical language different from earlier styles
- How tone colour, texture, resonance and atmosphere function as part of the musical structure
- The specific sound world required in Clair de lune
- Debussy’s treatment of written rhythm, flexibility and implied rubato
- How timing shapes phrase, line and expressive character in this repertoire
- Practical exercises for developing a more sensitive and stylistically aware approach
- Broader insights into impressionistic piano playing that can be applied beyond this single work
