Baroque, Classical & Romantic Workshops - Recordings Bundle
This bumper collection of workshop recordings features Graham Fitch's presentations on playing piano music from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods. Each set of workshops features high quality recordings of presentations filmed in our London studios and numerous repertoire examples with links to open domain scores where available.
Baroque Period (October 2022) - Having a knowledge of historical performance practice is essential for approaching Baroque music pianistically. In this set of four presentations, Graham drew upon his background as a harpsichord student and pianist to explore how one might achieve this:
- Style in Baroque Music: Ornamentation & Embellishment – Drawing upon detailed treatises on the subject from the Baroque period, Graham provided several basic principles to simplify ornamentation and embellishment.
- Playing Baroque Music Pianistically: Dynamics, Pedal & Tone Colour – In this session, Graham demonstrated creative approaches to playing Baroque music with personal authenticity – expressively and pianistically.
- Style in Baroque Music: Articulation – This session explored how a variety of different touches can be used to add articulation and bring the printed page to life.
- How to Learn a Fugue – Graham demonstrated several practice methods which can be applied to fugues and other contrapuntal music.
This set of workshops concluded with a performance workshop in which five pianists presented performances of three fugues and a selection of movements from three of the Partitas. Graham then worked with each of them individually on various aspects.
Classical Period (March 2024) - When we approach Classical Period piano music, we need to do so not through the 19th century eyes and ears we inherited from our teachers, but with an understanding of how to read a score from the period. What do composers mean by the short slurs and articulation marks? How do we interpret the ornament signs and symbols, and how might we add our own embellishments tastefully?
In this set of presentations, Graham explored these topics, along with pedalling, dynamics, choice of tempo using numerous repertoire examples by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven & Schubert.
Romantic Period (November 2024) - Romantic works are some of the most beloved in the piano literature and to play them well, the pianist needs a wide dynamic and colour palette, an understanding of advanced pedalling and a fertile imagination.
In this set of workshops, Graham demonstrated how to bring music from this period to life and to deliver stylistically appropriate, personal interpretations with confidence:
- Sessions 1 & 2: Introduction, Rubato, Dynamics and Touch – The first session started off discussing how tempo rubato works and then moved onto exploring the touches appropriate to the music of the period.
- Session 3: Pedalling – This session explored the various types of pedalling commonly used in playing romantic music, including flutter pedalling, half damping and fractional pedals.
- Session 4: Developing a Personal Interpretation – The last presentation looked at how to bring the music of this evocative period to life by developing a personal narrative using imagery and a little bit of fantasy.
These presentations were followed by a performance workshop in which three pianists presented works from the romantic period and worked with Graham on aspects such as tempo, interpretation, practice methods and technical challenges.
Featuring over 12 hours of presentations, performance workshops and demonstrations, these recordings will show you how to interpret and perform repertoire from each of these periods with confidence!
