As we saw in the module on Simplification Techniques, one of the most effective ways of simplifying a difficult score is to reduce it to its outer voices. This often gives us the essential ingredients of the piece: the melody, the bass line, and the rhythmic structure. Furthermore, it’s often possible to guess what the omitted notes in the middle might be, because the outer voices carry strong implications of the harmony.
